I admit I was skeptical about the basil but it was delicious! I don’t think we had as much basil as the recipe called for – we made the larger recipe with 2 cups of gin – but it was enough to turn it all green and the flavors were lovely and refreshing. I used lime instead of lemon, because it was what I had. We blended the gin (Barr Hill honey gin) and the lime juice ahead of time and refrigerated it. At serving time we used a stick blender for the basil with the gin and lime, strained it into a pitcher, added the honey syrup and poured it over ice filled, sugar rimmed old fashioned-type glasses. Wow what a hit. It is a strong drink though!! Great for celebrating the arrival of a Green Card for someone we love.

Hi Penny- I am so glad you liked this one! Yes, the color fades once blended or muddled. I suppose you could blend the basil right before serving?

Note that if making a large batch for a party and storing it in the fridge, the bright green color fades quickly to olive green in just a few hours. The taste is still delicious. We just renamed it “swamp coolers” and served them over ice. Perfect on a hot summer evening!
